It has been far too long since I have posted on our blog. Today we did a science lesson using the Ipads. I took some really great pictures and wanted to share them with you. Hopefully we will find a way to share the books the created on the ipads with you soon!
Enjoy the photos! I just simply cannot say enough about how impressed I am with the amount of thought, time, and effort that went into each and every one of these Native American homes. I have been showing them off all day! Way to go Room 11 and 12. Thank you to the families who spent quality time with their children putting the project together, I hope you enjoyed making them as much as we are enjoying seeing them! Also 5th grade started their presentations today! They are doing an astounding job teaching us about their tribes. They are so prepared. The amount of work that went into each and every presentation is very clear. These students are rockstars! Room 11 will be starting presentations tomorrow! All of the students have learned so much, far beyond just the Native Americans, but also how to create, edit and present information to an audience. They learned how to practice speaking in front of a group with an engaging voice and eye contact. They learned how to research online and how to properly give citations. They learned how to take notes that would help them in their presentations. I am VERY proud of all of the students who participated in this project! THANK YOU! Please check out the slide show below to see the wonderful work done by Rooms 11 and 12. Look what I found!! Last year these boys purchased, from our silent auction, a day with me to play laser tag, mini golf and have pizza at Putters! We had a blast! Whose come this year?!?
Thank you PTO for our Artist in Residence! Students are having a blast creating with Mr. Alex. Today they are painting their self-portrait tiles.
Please consider giving to the "Love Our School" fundraiser any contribution helps! Collection envelopes went home with 5th graders yesterday! All the money we earn goes to support programs like our Artist in Residence. Last year we learned to Salsa Dance, this year we are learning to be creative through art and pottery. It is due on February 23rd, when students will be presenting it to the class. Also due February 23rd is their IN-CLASS research presentation. We willing working on and completing this presentation together in class. Below I have included the rubric for it. If you would like to check in on this presentation from home, you are welcome to view it on their google docs account. Thank you so much for your support with this. The students are learning so much history!! They are also very engaged and excited to learn about their tribes. I am excited to start the new year off with this great group of kids.
For the next several weeks both 4th and 5th grade will be studying the regions of North America. Our main focus will be on the Native Americans who settled in North America prior to the arrival of the English settlers. Students are very excited and so far very engaged in our lessons. We will study each region of North America and the people who settled in them. We will finish off the unit with a research project on a tribe of the students choice from one of the regions studied. Students will be asked to present the information to the class, as well as give a short speech about what they learned. I will also be asking them to recreate a dwelling replica of the tribe they chose. This replica will be an at home project. More details to come on this in a couple of weeks. I am very excited to see what students come up with! Last week in class we focused on story leads. Story leads are when you get the reader interested right from the beginning of your story. There are a variety of ways to accomplish this, however in class we talked about the following four:
1. Question Lead: Do you have a fear of dogs? Well I do, it began on a hot summer day when I was 6 a big dog bit me in the leg. 2. Action Lead: Whoosh I hit that ball so far into the air it disappeared into the sky. That' s when I knew I had made the play of my life. That morning when I woke up... 3. Talking Lead: "Mom" I screamed, "there's a giant green spider living under my bed". Of course she didn't believe me and said I was "only dreaming", but that night when I heard my mom's scream I knew exactly what she was looking at... 4. Jump Right In: In the blink of an eye my the wheels of my bike were spinning above my head and I knew I was in trouble... Please encourage your writers to use these leads in their writing in order to get the reader excited right from the start. We are also learning about pronouns. Take a minute to ask your student what the following types of pronouns are: Personal Pronoun, Possessive Pronoun, and Indefinite Pronoun. If they can't tell you take a stroll through their binder and review their pronoun sheet from writing time. GARDEN CLUB IS TOMORROW AND IT IS GOING TO BE COLD!
